At 14th century, the town has acquired its renown of cultural and artistic site, when the Pope Clement V and his court are run away from Roma to Avignon, where a new pope residence had been built.
Between 1309 and 1377, considerable money sums were invested in Pope Palace building and decoration.
Even after the return of pope court in Roma, whereas Avignon was become a disreputable place frequented by criminal bands, the city is remained nevertheless a cultural area.
Today, Avignon keeps its traditions of artistic city, with an event calendar very busy. The most famous event is the Avignon Festival in July, which permit to welcome hundreds of thousands visitors.
